with justice for all
Project reflection
Project Describtion,
In our humanities 11th grade class first were studying on some different philosophies, and big philosophers. We ended up with doing“With justice for all” project. We started by studying Dr. King’s ideas of Civil Disobedience and his definitions of what makes a just v. unjust law. We then studied various moral and political philosophies of justice that have influenced or legal system including Deontology, Utilitarianism, John Rawls’ and Libertarianism. We researched various issues of injustice in Durango and heard from community organizations about the issues they are working on from homelessness to immigration to environmental issues. Then we researched these issues and then voted on Homelessness to tackle as a class. We researched homelessness, hearing from various community organizations who work on this issue (Axis, Ed Aber, Food Not Bombs, Veteran Homestead Project). We did a field trip to the test tracks, were we saw their camps and in real life how the homeless people from Durango actually live. We voted and defined the problem and goal of our event, one of our big goals was that we wanted to do an impact on our community, and make the community more aware of the homeless problem. We planned the event and created projects to achieve our goal.
Event Takeaways,
Our project was about making awareness about the homeless problem in Durango and to hear people's different oppoinion or their view of homelessness. Our focus was making people who may not know much about the problem open up their eyes and learn more about it, and learn about the different services that the Durango community provides. At our event we had a lot of people from the different services and other organisations which really helped people get that kind of knowledge we wanted them to have. At the event a lot of people came up to us and asked us many questions about our project, and about what we have learned throughout this project. I think people were really interested in our project, and many people thought what we did was inspiring.
Project Effort,
I think for this project that we did a really good effort, and a lot of hard work. We did a lot of outreach and got in contact with so many people from our community. We also had a lot of good guest speakers in our class, which helped us understanding the problem, from people who works with the homeless problem everyday. I think for me personally this project was good and important for me because why we did it, because we had a goal and we wanted to see some changes in our community. And also because of so many people who helped us, and supported us for our goal.
Personal Growth and Development,
For this project we really focused on community outreach and how to do some action in our community. And for me were we in our class not only learned about homelessness, were we actually went to see the homeless camps, were we got to experience it in real life. It was definitely an eye opener for me and how I think of Durango as a community. I got to interview some homeless people myself, talk to them and ask them why the ended up as they did. That was a powerful experience, many of the homeless people have had a trauma in their past, or dealt with other major problems that were out of their reach. But many of them agreed with us that low income housing definitely is a good solution to the problem, because the high price of housing right now in Durango is really bad,and needs to change.
